SC man shot in field

GAFFNEY, S.C. — A North Carolina man has been charged in the shooting death of a South Carolina man found in a field in Gaffney.


Gaffney police responded to a report of a shooting shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler says the victim was 18-year-old Trey T. Montgomery of Gaffney. Montgomery was taken to a Gaffney hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say 20-year-old Steven Oliver Beam Jr. of Shelby, N.C., has been charged with murder.

Sgt. Knox Blanton said Beam was expected to make a first court appearance Monday. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.

Fowler says an autopsy is planned.
