According to a news statement released by authorities, Benjamin C. Crapse, 28, of North Augusta, attempted to escape police custody while being transferred from the courtroom back to his jail cell. Crapse was restrained with handcuffs and belly-chains during his transport.
After a brief foot pursuit, Crapse was apprehended behind the North Augusta Community Center across the street from Public Safety Headquarters about 100 yards away, police said. In the process of being secured, an officer tazed Crapse striking him in the arm.
Crapse was returned to Public Safety Headquarters and incarcerated. EMS responded to Public Safety and rendered medical aid to Crapse as a precaution. Crapse complained of pain to his rib area and was transported to Aiken Regional Hospital for further attention.
Crapse had appeared in court this morning to face multiple charges of shoplifting, failure to obey a lawful order and giving false information to police.
After court, Crapse was being returned to jail and held for Hampton County on unrelated charges. Crapse now faces an additional charge of escape with North Augusta.
