CANTON, Ga. -- A 20-year-old maintenance worker was arrested in the beating death of a 7-year-old north Georgia girl who was abducted and killed at an apartment complex and her body left in a trash bin, authorities said Wednesday.

Ryan Brunn, who lived and worked at the apartment complex, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon on a murder warrant, said Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan.

Jorelys Rivera was last seen Friday evening leaving the playground to walk back home to get drinks for her friends. Authorities said she was taken to an empty apartment in the complex, where she was sexually assaulted, stabbed and beaten to death.

Keenan said Brunn, who has no known criminal record, had keys to both the empty apartment and the trash compactor bin where Rivera's body was placed.

"We are confident that Brunn is the killer and that is why he is in custody," Keenan said, declining to detail what evidence investigators have against him.

It was not immediately known whether Brunn had an attorney. He was being held at the Cherokee County jail.

Brunn is not a registered sex offender in Georgia, according to state records online.

Keenan said investigators focused on Brunn after receiving information from the public. Brunn had been under police surveillance since Tuesday night. Keenan said the investigation will continue for several months.

"This is a mammoth case," Keenan told reporters at a news conference in Canton. "We believe that this horrendous crime was planned and calculated, and we've recovered a lot of evidence."

Blue Ridge District Attorney Garry Moss said he had not made a decision yet on whether to seek the death penalty.

On Wednesday, Canton Police Chief Jeff Lance thanked investigators and volunteers who searched for the slain child.

"Our goal was to make an arrest for what has happened to this sweet, innocent little girl," Lance said.

When Rivera's body was found three days after she disappeared, the community where neighbors said they all knew each other was shaken and a makeshift memorial took root at the playground.

Investigators said they received numerous tips from the public and that valuable evidence had come from apartment complex residents. They also interviewed several sex offenders living at the complex, Keenan said. On Tuesday he said officials had no reason to believe those sex offenders were involved.

As details of the crime emerged, residents said they were worried.

"I'm very concerned," Drew Baucom, 17, said soon after the killing. "It makes me feel like my home life is violated, that I can't trust somebody walking around that you think you may know, but you really don't. It just worries me that something else will happen like this."

About 65 local, state and federal investigators worked the case and several hundred interviews were conducted, authorities said.

Jeremy Gibson, 24-year-old resident of the apartment community, said before the arrest that he was concerned about the safety of all the children who live there.

"Every day children play out here," he said. "It's starting to become a dangerous place for them. If it's happened to one little girl already, it could happen to someone else. I hope they catch whoever did it soon."

The manager of the apartment complex did not immediately reply to a message from the AP seeking comment.

He may not be a convicted sex

He may not be a convicted sex offender- but I say, with 100% certainty, that he has offended before. Nobody goes through the first 20 years of their life as normal, normal, normal and then does something as depraved as this.

I'd like a couple of minutes

I'd like a couple of minutes alone with this sorry excuse for a human. It will be the most agonizing final couple of minutes of his disgusting life. I'd have no problem with it either.

He'll likely have to be kept

He'll likely have to be kept in isolation when he's behind bars. The nature of the crime and the injuries inflicted on the little girl would make this guy a prime target for the other inmates.

It is good they caught this

It is good they caught this freak. He will be tried at the taxpayers expense and housed in prison, hopefully on death row, but there for 15-20 years. Our system is broke. The part in the article where they said they interviewed several sex offenders that lived in the complex is really scary. Not a great place to have a family.

You know....I'm a mom of a 9

You know....I'm a mom of a 9 year old son. He is very, active, has lots of friends and they play outside all the time. He has done Karate with an organization that actually loves kids and I felt very, protected with him there for the past 3 years. Now he wants to do football. How can a parent not be over-protective when you hear things like Penn State, and even in Columbia County, where a father molested a young girl in the park while he was waiting to pick up his own son? How can you not be paranoid with demons like this at every turn? It's a shame that our kids can't be carefree they way we were growing up! That baby was playing in the park just being a child, and this demon-possessed idiot hurt, sexually assaulted and killed her! Lord, we can't keep the children locked in the house! I pray all the time. That's the only choice really. No matter how much we love our children and try to protect them, satan is on the prowl and God's strength is better than ours. Lord, please bless this family and this community. It could be any of our experience at any time:(

getalife, I know what you

getalife, I know what you mean about sex offenders in the apartment building, but the truth is, they could be in your community and you not know it. I am a parent, and the HOA Secretary, so I keep up with Registered Sex Offenders. We had one person move in, he wasn't a child molester, but we got him out. That's all I will say. However, they can be a sex offender without being a child molester and move in your neighborhood. There are different catergories and by law, unless it is someone extremely violent, or an immediate threat, they can live there. Child molesters can't live around children, but someone who takes a leak in a public place and it's reported can become a registered sex offender. You just have to research and stay abreast of who is moving in and out. Especially in rental units such as apartment complexes.

Some people need killing in

Some people need killing in the worst kind of way; think Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgway, and this guy.

Is it Justice or Vengeance? No it’s Justice AND Vengeance, appropriate justice and collective vengeance.
