Speeding Mercedes crashes into Ga. cemetery

NEWNAN, Ga. — Police say a speeding Mercedes full of teenagers toppled several tombstones as it rolled and tumbled across the graves.

Newnan police Officer Chris Sudduth tells The Times-Herald the accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Sudduth said the car was traveling about 50 mph when it hit a curb, flipped several times and knocked over five or six headstones before coming to rest on its roof.

Police said a 17-year-old driver of the 1997 Mercedes E-Class was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital for evaluation and was charged with reckless driving.

Sudduth said an 18-year-old, two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old refused treatment at the scene and were released to their parents.

Families whose headstones were damaged were being contacted by authorities.
