According to an incident report, North Augusta authorities were called to University Hospital after the victim told Richmond County deputies he had been shot in the ankle near Austin Street and Crestlyn Drive.
The victim, identified as Alan Michael Bargeron, told officers he had been walking in the area around 8:30 p.m. when four to five men in their early 20s came up behind him and robbed him of his jacket, cell phone and $40. Police said the victim broke away and was shot in the ankle while fleeing.
Bargeron told officer he did not wish to file a report or have the incident investigated.
The victim also had active felony warrants from South Carolina Probation and Paroles.
