Elderly man dies in Edgefield wreck

A 75-year-old man died after being hit by a tractor trailer in Edgefield County late Sunday evening.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the man was traveling eastbound on Ridge Road in a 1997 Ford Explorer when he ran a stop sign and was hit by a tractor trailer traveling northbound on US Highway 25.

The 75-year-old, who has not been identified at this time, was transported to Medical College of Georgia Hospital where he later died. Troopers said he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the tractor trailer was identified as Hercules Fields, 39, of North, Ga.

The incident is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
