Martinez teen crash victim released from hospital

A Martinez teen involved in a Monday wreck that killed his mother was released Thursday from Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Jonathan Ryan Trum, 14, suffered multiple injuries in the crash on Columbia Road. His principal, Steven Cummings of Columbia Middle School, said Thursday he required surgeries for gashes on his face and suffered fractures to his left arm.

Janet Davis Trum, 55, of Crown Pointe Drive in Martinez, was driving Jonathan to school about 7 a.m. when she rear-ended a utility trailer being pulled by a Pete Alewine Pool and Spa truck stopped to turn left from the westbound lane of Columbia Road.

Columbia County Sheriff Clay Whittle said Trum didn’t appear to apply the brakes of her 2004 Chevy Malibu before the crash. He said Trum seemed to swerve to the right at the last second and caught the front left corner of the car on the rear right corner of the trailer.

The car was peeled along the left side and nearly torn in two.
