University Hospital and Georgia Health Sciences University finalized an agreement Tuesday that will bring many more medical residents to train at University in coming years.
The plan is to gradually increase over the next three years the number of residents who train at University, which had traditionally been a teaching hospital until residency hours restrictions caused GHSU to pull its residents out several years ago, returning a few in the last few years. Under the agreement, by 2013, there were will be 32 residents who use University as part of their training -- 12 internal medicine, 12 general surgery and eight obstetrics and gynecology. By 2015, the number will increase to 48.
I have heard similar plans proposed so much over the decades. SOMETHING will happen. Physicians at University do not want residents who may stay there later eating into their business when the training is finished.
Taxpayers of Richmond County....Commission...Hospital Authority....University Hospital Foundation.
For the people of Richmond County, the best thing to ever happen at University is the hospital hiring the surgeons and other specialists. The private groups have run a monopoly for decades keeping other specialists out. Now that the hospital owns the specialities, the best, most qualified person will be hired at the appropriate salary. Those unqualified will be sent on their way, hopefully.
Remember University makes tens of millions in profit every year that could be turned over to the county.
