The Augusta Sports Council and World Triathlon Corporation announced today a three-year extension to continue the ESi Ironman 70.3 Augusta competition through 2014.

Billed as the "World's Largest Ironman Event," the race was first held in Augusta in 2009. A sellout field of more than 3,000 participants is expected once again for this year's race, which is scheduled for Sept. 25.

The Augusta Sports Council is the host for the event, and race management is provided by the World Triathlon Corporation.

"Hosting the ESi Ironman 70.3 Augusta has been a historic benchmark for the Augusta Sports Council" said Brinsley Thigpen, chief executive director. "We look forward to continuing our partnership with such a well-known elite sports brand."

Introduced in 2006, the Ironman 70.3 Series has grown to include more than 50 events, offering races around the world that qualify athletes for the Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Henderson, Nev.

Ironman 70.3 races consist of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike and a 13.1-mile (half marathon) run, which adds up to 70.3 miles of total racing.

Race registration for the 2011 ESi Ironman 70.3 Augusta is still open for participants. For additional information, visit www.ironmanaugusta.com or contact the Augusta Sports Council at (706) 722-8326.

Anyone who wants to be outdoors on Sept 25 has my blessings.
Day long heat and humidity is not my bag.

Darn those ecofreaks

Darn those ecofreaks concerned with an asset as useless as a river with low enough toxicity to host major income-source events like this! Darn them and their short-sighted ways!

I'm 100% behind this event.
Unpublished

I'm 100% behind this event. I'm too fat & out of shape for it, but if it gives Augusta something else to be known for (besides being ghettoville) then great! It helps bring much needed money to Augusta.

The city of Augusta is on

The city of Augusta is on another level in the year 2011. The US Cycling Championships were held here recently, and they're returning in 2012.. I can't wait until the tourist see the amount of growth taking place in Richmond County.. There's construction along almost all of the major roadways..(Reynolds, Broad, Washington, Wrightsboro, Wheeler, Gordon Hwy, Riverwatch Pkwy, Peach Orchard, etc..
