Bobby Jones green jacket sold at auction

The coat offered at auction this week

The 1937 personal Augusta National Golf Club Green Jacket made for Robert T. "Bobby" Jones has brought $310,700 at Heritage Auctions on Thursday on as part of the company’s Vintage Sports Collectibles Platinum Auction, according to a press release.

The auction was held in conjunction with the National Sports Collectors Convention, held in Chicago. Last month, the auction house expected the jacket to fetch more than $100,000.

Green jackets rarely come up for sale because Augusta National restricts the jackets from being taken off club grounds, and the only exception is that the winner of the Masters gets to keep it for a year.

The jacket was purchased by an overseas buyer who has chosen to remain anonymous, according to the press release.
