Car crashes into pole, closing Whiskey Road

A single-car crash damaged a utility pole Sunday evening, closing Whiskey Road in Aiken from Mead Avenue to Grace Avenue Southeast.

South Carolina Electric and Gas worked to replace the pole, Aiken Public Safety Sgt. Jake Mahoney said in an e-mail. No injuries were reported.

The driver said he was startled when a transformer on a nearby utility pole shorted out and exploded. He then swerved and hit another pole, causing it to snap and block the road, police said.

Whiskey Road was reopened about 9 p.m.
