Savannah Riverwalk's work needs downgraded

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Engineering consultants say the Savannah Riverwalk will not need as much stabilization work as they suggested in March.

Geosyntec Consultants and Gary Greene Engineers have completed a review and have concluded that a section of the Riverwalk only needs additional rip rap placed in front of the bulkhead to meet the design load demands brought on by additional fill and increased traffic.

City Council members received the assessment in a memo on Wednesday.

Thomas & Hutton, design engineers for the project, have agreed to replace a section of the riverwalk. Thomas & Hutton will repair a bowed section by removing the rail and recasting a platform to make it straight.

The riverwalk extends east of the Savannah Riverfront Marriott at the former Savannah River Landing site.
