Deadline near for Georgia tag choice

Georgians have less than a week to decide which will be the peachiest new state license plate.

Hundreds of people submitted designs for the new tag that the state will begin issuing next year, and the eight semi-finalists all incorporate the "Peach State" theme.

The state Department of Revenue sponsored the contest, which was open to anyone who aspired to have their artwork seen by millions of people as Georgians drive cars around the state and across the country.

A panel of university art professors pared down the field of entries to eight semi-finalists, but Revenue Commissioner Doug MacGinnitie is letting citizens have the next-to-last word.

Georgians have been casting online votes since June 24, but voting ends Friday.

MacGinnitie, Gov. Nathan Deal and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle will select the winning design from the top three vote-getters, and announce the winner July 15.

The winning artist will get his photo taken with the three state officials and receive a commemorative license plate.

But best of all, the winner will know his work will be seen wherever Georgians drive.

"As state revenue commissioner, I feel it is important to present this opportunity to the citizens of this great state to showcase the artistic and creative talents of our citizens," MacGinnitie said in a statement released by his office.

Officials decided to redesign the general issue license plates because change was long overdue, according to Reg Lansberry, a spokesman for the revenue department.

"Over 2 million license plates have been in service for more than seven years, and some for more than 14 years, so the reflectivity of those plates have declined significantly," he said.

That creates a public safety issue, Lansberry said, because it's harder for police officers to read the older tags.
