Video of a teen fight in the Augusta Mall over the weekend has gained attention after a cell phone video hit YouTube.

According to Richmond County sheriff's Capt. Scott Gay, the fight involving multiple 15- and 16-year-olds stemmed from an ongoing Facebook feud and escalated while the girls were in the food court of the mall around 8 p.m. Saturday.

Security and deputies stepped in and eventually stopped the fray but not before a glass hanging over food at Sbarro was broken, Gay said.

The juveniles were charged with second degree criminal damage to property and affray.

Wow...I know where I WON'T be

Wow...I know where I WON'T be going anytime soon. This is why businesses move out of the mall, just in case anyone is wondering. Who wants to worry about violence while trying to shop or eat? The most disturbing part of this is the lack of respect these girls are showing for the police officers. Hopefully, their arrests will convince them to change their ways.

It has been said for years

It has been said for years that this will be another Regency Mall and it appears to be happening. I only go to the mall on weekdays and during daylight hours. I rarely go then unless I absolutely need something from there that I can't get elsewhere. The fact that someone even filmed that and put it on youtube shows the true character of what hangs out there on the weekends.

The same people have been

The same people have been saying Augusta would close for years... They recently built a 180k sq. ft. outside promenade in 2007... Twelve new stores have opened since last year... Three other stores are undergoing renovations at the mall..

There weren't any males involved just teenage girls.. Haven't Mullins Crossing, The Gateway, Riverwood Town Center, Evans Town Park, etc all open in Columbia County already.. Well go shop at Mullins Crossing where employees have been robbed before..

Sorry there was property

Sorry there was property damage and it seemed that noone was hurt but isn't it funny to watch young girls fight. In high school they always fought by slapping and pulling hair. Usually ended up with detention and not jail!

Happening all over the

Happening all over the country with the help of social media. Police should always follow through and make sure ALL are arrested.

However, until parents step up to the plate and begin parenting again instead of relying on the government as our current social enabling government encourages, nothing will change.

Additionally, until judges GET REAL with their punishments they will continue to laugh at the system and disrespect authority as they know there really are no consequences for your actions.

SeenitB4.. Arrest the young

SeenitB4.. Arrest the young males because they were laughing and didn't stop the fight??

Are you sure I'm the one wearing the blindfolds?? I didn't know it was a crime to laugh and not break up the fight..

Gutdawg... How do you know the males are thugs? The majority of teenagers laugh when other kids get into a fight..

The Augusta mall had a 95% occupancy rate in July 2010 and eleven new stores have opened since then..

P.S. The 115 acre Village at Riverwatch is located in Richmond County..

I'm glad the Chronicle is

I'm glad the Chronicle is finally covering this.

Countyman, yet again, your rose colored glasses are showing. Businesses have incentives to come to the mall. That doesn't guarantee that they will stay open. It only takes 1-2 incidents like this for the tide of public opinion to change about a place. Occupancy rates do not mean bunk if people no longer feel safe going somewhere.

Looks like an average

Looks like an average cafeteria fight in high school every week. Nothing wrong with Augusta Mall -- it is just a reflection of society as a whole. Bullying is now done through FB and Twitter -- and the results of the fight are recorded and put on YouTube. Kids have fights in the restroom and record them on their cell phones. This is entertainment for them.

I have been to malls over the country and Saturday evening is always the popular time for teens to congregate. Teens do not equal thugs. Thugs are lawbreakers and they come in every shape, size, and color. The only difference is that we are cutting the budget for law enforcement in Richmond County and most other places have a much greater police presence, which is a deterrent in itself. I don't have a problem with Augusta Mall and I don't have a problem with going there anytime of the day.

@ Sweet son: You must have

@ Sweet son: You must have gone to HS a long time ago. Girls' fights are more violent than guys. When the guys fight at school, male teachers and public safety break them up pretty easily. When girls fight, usually they have to resort to more drastic means like pepper spray to get them to stop. Girls will not only fight each other, but the people trying to break them up. Guys usually save it for the one they are fighting.

Cestlavie... During the

Cestlavie... During the recession most cities laid off police officers.. Some cities aren't answering every call because of the lack of funds.. Richmond County hired 25 road patrol offices last year..

Gutdawg.. Don't worry the Village at Riverwatch and Cherry Street Shopping center will do just fine.. The Shoppes at Dyess(Jimmie Dyess Pkwy) of the Dyess Park mix-use development starts construction soon...

The Augusta Exchange, Surrey Center, and Augusta mall(built in 1978) are all still here..

The 25 acre shopping center on Jimmie Dyess, Carmax area, Dyess Park mix use development, and Flowing Wells Business Park will be inside of Richmond County too..

The shopping is starting to return to the downtown area in 2011.. Sprint Food & Metro Market is opening at 851 Broad street(what's left of the old Belk building.

@Cest:

Good post. The people in Augusta think that they live on another planet. . . .this happens EVERYWHERE. This is how kids these days do things. ALL TYPES OF KIDS!

Teenagers + social media + cameras = modern times...

There has never been a chick fight in CC anywhere......man I could name about 12 off the top of my head alone.

Yet, when a certain group of people are involved, now its a big issue.

If CC gets a mall. . . .so what?!?

Cestlavie? "Teens do not

Cestlavie?
"Teens do not equal thugs. Thugs are lawbreakers and they come in every shape, size, and color."

Fighting in a public place and destroying property not enough law breaking for you? What would it have taken?

Ignoring the problem will only make it worse. If mine were involved in it, I would want her to have the consequences of dealing with law enforcement. She'd have better judgment the next time.

Willow Bailey.. A few posters

Willow Bailey.. A few posters have said the males should also be punished.. The young males aren't thugs because they didn't stop the fight between people they've never met.. I don't think Cestlavie comment was in reference to the young girls fighting...

Finally some coverage of this

Finally some coverage of this story. Watch the video. The 2 security guards are pulled to the ground during the brawl. The other weird thing about the video is the crowds reaction. They are laughing, cheering, oooing and encouraging the fight.

The poster Boredinaug said

The poster Boredinaug said the young men should be arrested.. I already know the Regency Mall closed over ten years ago in an lower middle class area.. Several cities have dead malls including the one in Augusta... The Regency mall will be redeveloped sooner or later... The same people who continue to bring up the Regency Mall.. They never mention no other large shopping area has closed in Augusta since then... Please make sure to read the trade area populations with an open mind..

I don't bring up other dead

I don't bring up other dead malls because they don't have the connection in my life like Augusta Ga. does.....I lived nearby-my daughters worked there---I loved shopping there---& when I saw it go down hill it broke my heart...I would love to see that area prosper again...wish Augusta leaders would devise a plan that would work for all....see....sometimes I wear rose-colored glasses too!!

This is another reason law

This is another reason law abiding citizens should have the right to conceal weapons in public places. The Augusta Mall is going down the tubes. Richmond county can keep all these thugs for all I care. Columbia County has enough to keep us busy already....

I don't understand why

I don't understand why Augusta Mall doesn't put in a loitering restriction- people under 18 are not allowed at the Mall Friday through Sunday nights without a parent or guardian present---that stops everybody REAL quick and calms everything down. It also stops the Mall from going from a shopping mall to a teen recreation club- the ones that behave have nothing to worry about, the ones that don't will be arrested.

Countyman needs to learn subtraction- according to him, Augusta only adds shops and restaurants, none ever close.

Surrey Center is having lots of security problems, too. And it has for years, but they hushed it up (bad for business, you know)

But such things don't exist in Countyman's world.
