The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Sunday that a witness called police June 18 and said she had seen a man smack the flying bird with a baseball bat.
The woman took the bird to an animal shelter, and it died later of head trauma.
Police say 32-year-old Louis Hoppmann III told police he and friends were playing a beach game when he noticed more than a dozen seagulls flocking over his blanket and the group's food.
Hoppmann told officers he made one swing with a bat to try to scatter the birds and hit one of them. It wasn't immediately clear when Hoppmann would appear in court.
