NEW YORK -- A teary-eyed congressman from New York confessed Monday that he tweeted a lewd photo of himself to a young woman and admitted "inappropriate" exchanges with six women, reversing his string of denials about the incidents.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., walks from his office to an elevator in the Rayburn House Office Building for a vote, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wed., June 1, 2011. Weiner denied Wednesday sending a lewd photo from his Twitter account to a 21-year-old woman, trying to calm a media furor that has only increased by the day and wasn't put to rest by the combative lawmaker's latest comments. But on Monday, June 6, 2011, he recanted, admitting he did send the photo to a woman and apologizing for lying about it. Associated Press

In an apparent attempt to end the scathing headlines that the allegations have drawn, U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat, apologized repeatedly in a half-hour news conference for lying - but said he would not resign from the House of Representatives.

Weiner insisted that he had never met any of the women he corresponded with online and sometimes via telephone, and was not even sure of their ages. He also said he had never had sex outside of his marriage.

"This was me doing a dumb thing, and doing it repeatedly, and lying about it," he said.

Weiner, 46, married Hillary Rodham Clinton aide Huma Abedin last July, with former President Bill Clinton officiating. Abedin was born in the U.S.; her father was of Indian descent, and her mother was from Pakistan. Before his marriage, Weiner had been known as one of New York's most eligible bachelors.

He said Monday that he did not feel the scandal affected his work as a lawmaker but would understand if his constituents decided not to re-elect him.

"I'm going to work very hard to win back their trust," he said.

It was unclear how Weiner's admission of his online activities would affect his career. Shortly after his announcement, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader of the House, called for an ethics committee investigation to determine if Weiner had broken House rules. Weiner said he would cooperate with an investigation.

A member of congress for 14 years, Weiner gained a national profile last year supporting liberal provision of President Barack Obama's health care reform bill.

Republican opposition to that reform bill is one reason Obama and fellow Democrats could face tougher races during the 2012 congressional and presidential races.

A conservative website, which last week started the furor over the photo of the congressman's bulging underpants sent from Weiner's Twitter account, on Monday posted new photos purportedly from a second woman who said she received shirtless shots of the congressman.

Weiner had earlier said of the underwear photo that his account was hacked and that he'd hired a lawyer and a private security firm to investigate the incident.

Weiner called the underpants photo a joke and a "hugely regrettable mistake."

Meanwhile, ABC News said Monday it planned to air an interview with a Texas woman, Meagan Broussard, who claims to be one of the women who exchanged messages with Weiner. The 26-year-old single mother said she has dozens of emails, Facebook messages and cell phone logs that document more than a month of flirting that started on April 20.

BigGovernment.com, the website run by conservative activist Andrew Breitbart, had posted the latest photos and said they were in a cache of intimate online photographs, chats and email exchanges the woman claimed to have. The website did not identify the woman.

One photo showed Weiner on a couch with two cats nearby. The website said Weiner sent the photo using the anthonyweiner@aol.com account with the subject line "Me and the pussys."

The celebrity website RadarOnline.com said a woman claimed to have 200 sexually explicit messages from Weiner through a Facebook account that Weiner no longer uses. It was not clear whether the woman who claimed to have the new photo was the person who claimed to have received the text messages.

The photo showing Weiner shirtless was reminiscent of a photo of former Rep. Chris Lee, a New York Republican who resigned from office earlier this year after a shirtless photo he sent a woman on Craig's List became public. A Democrat won his seat.

Weiner began his career as a legislative assistant to then-Rep. Chuck Schumer, who is now the state's senior senator. He was elected to the New York City Council before winning Schumer's House seat in 1998, representing parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Ok America, so he sent the picture of his of his package IN underwear....big freaking deal! How many politicians have done worse and it gets swept under the rug? Newt cheats on his wife while she is dying from cancer and the GOP thinks we were TOO harsh on him. Wiener sends a racy (not pornographic) picture to a girl on the internet and the GOP is calling for his head on a platter. Seriously!!!!

Well it was obvious he was guilty when he didn't want the "hacking" investigated and when he got so arrogant and defensive with the press and their questions. He's a liar AND a loser. Why don't these people just 'fess up when they first get caught?

Hey dougk, I am sure Jenny Sanford could shorten the forgiveness process for her by suggesting that she kicks Weiner to the curb, post haste. Once an egotistical lying cheater always one; just ask Jenny, Hillary and Michelle. How do these people have time to work?

happychimer, He is quoted as saying..."Weiner called the initial photo a joke and a "hugely regrettable mistake."

It won't work unless she buries her head in the sand and pretends it doesn't exist. Weiner is only WORDLY sorry which translates into, D, I got caught and this is messy and causing problems for my agenda. Completely different from GODLY sorry, which admits the seriousness of his character defects, the pain it causes for others, and a true desire to repent, make honest amends and change his ways.

Slimeball needs to resign.

Slimeball needs to resign. 30+ years ago this would not even have been an issue; he would have been gone by now. But Clinton and other Dem slimeballs lowered the standards to this disgustingly low level.

Weiner didn't break any laws,

Weiner didn't break any laws, as Senator Ensign obviously did, nor did he ever proclaim himself a standard of morality and family values like Craig, Hyde, Gingrich, Vitter, Lee, Sanford, etc. Of course, the worst of the worst is probably John Edwards, but at least he never tried to legislate morality. Weiner shouldn't have lied. No question about it. But he wasn't trying to conceal anything illegal or worthy of censure. I'll admit that I like the guy. He's a gutsy little guy. He's very sharp on the issues, and one of our most articulate congressmen. As I watched his news conference, my heart sunk. Here was a guy that a lot of people saw as genuine leader in Congress. It's a shame that something like this would damage his ability to continue to serve. Of course, people who don't care for his positions are going to be a lot less forgiving. They think people like Eric Cantor and John Boehner are the true standards of morality in government.

Just because you get elected doesn't mean that you become an automaton and all your human weaknesses are left behind. If anything, the temptations to do these kinds of things increases with the power you have and your sense of invulnerability. That's why we see this kinds of incidents so frequently. At least Weiner hasn't been a hypocrite and tried to sell himself as Mr. Family Values. That's far worse. Weiner, on the other hand, should have known that someone like Andrew Breitbart would be trying to discredit him. You can bet that over the last couple of days hundreds of men in Congress have been deleting files from all of their applications.

"At least Weiner hasn't been

"At least Weiner hasn't been a hypocrite".....no just a liar and unfaithful husband. He can say he's never had sex outside of his marriage.....maybe the opportunity just hadn't presented himself. If this had continued to go on and he'd never gotten caught, would he have eventually met one of these women and had an affair. He's only admitting now because the lie doesn't work any more.

It's unbelievable that there is such a double standard.....doesn't matter if the man professes family values or not (is not stating he's never cheated on his wife in a way professing family values). Whether you sent inappropriate pictures of yourself to women whom you are not married to (joke or no joke) or whether you have an affair outside the marriage......in your heart your still being unfaithful.

So, everybody here who is

So, everybody here who is calling all politicians morons has never had any sexual peccadillos of their own and has been living a squeaky clean life which Andrew Breitbart could never dig up any dirt on. If you people are looking for human perfection in your politicians, good luck. The best that you can hope for is less hypocrisy.

Some of you(ICL) need to re-read my comments. I don't excuse Weiner for lying. But he was lying out of embarrassment, not because he had broken any law or public trust. Human sexual peccadillos should not disqualify people from serving in public office. Weiner admitted that he "panicked" and made the decision to deny he had sent the Tweets. If we didn't live in such a hypocritically puritanical society he probably would have just admitted things and moved on. Of course, if that was the case, people like Andrew Breitbart wouldn't exist.

These were PRIVATE Tweets that were hacked from his account. (Wonder if Andrew Breitbart had anything to do with that?) You can't see these personal Tweets sent to single recipients unless you're a hacker.

"Democrats = Liars"

Yes because we all know republicans are pure and moral and have never lied before. You know if you don't like the democrats that's fine. But at least come up with a legit reason. ALL POLITICIANS LIE! Even your precious conservative ones. Neither party deserves to be put on a moral pedestal.

Lastly, If you want every politician to resign who has ever used the internet for something that would have been personally embarrassing if it ever got out, Congress would be perpetually empty. We need to stop holding our politicians to these kinds of puritanical standards. As long as he hasn't been a hypocrite about "family values", which he hasn't, he can should be able to get past this.

I don't condone what Weiner

I don't condone what Weiner did. It's juvenile and pathetic. However, I can only imagine what dirty laundry would have been swinging on the line if the internet and tweeting had been available many years ago. Presidents, congressmen and senators enjoyed the liberty of the press looking the other way for a very long time. The internet and everyone and their brother armed with a cell phone camera has made that impossible today. Tough noogies to today's politicians. They know what they're in for when they get elected.

He shouldn't resign because he tweeted a photo of his tightie-whities. He should resign because anyone who does that isn't mature enough to hold an elected position.

He sat back and let Breitbart

He sat back and let Breitbart take the heat and still claimed he was innocent until he was threatened with more exposure, then he came clean. I watched the full thing today from when Breitbart spoke until Weiner finally came to the mike. The reporters asked him several time if he was planing to apologize to Breitbart before he finally did.
I would call that hypocritical and cowardly.

This guy has been doing this

This guy has been doing this for a long time and he needs to go and get himself some counseling. My issue is that I see a society that promotes this kind of behavior with porn and many other venues and then we are ready to crucify a guy when he acts out what he has filled his mind with. Yes, he alone is responsible for his actions but don't expect any better when our culture promotes it with one hand and then slaps the person with the other.
