Overnight storms darken parts of SC

A line of storms brought high winds and hail to parts of South Carolina, leaving thousands of people without power.

Major utilities serving the state reported about 50,000 customers were without service early today.

Most of the storms moved offshore, but there were numerous reports of downed trees and power lines.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Schools were closed in Chester County because of the storms.

Duke Energy reported more than 33,000 customers without service, nearly half in York County. Rock Hill officials say 17 crews are working to restore power. Officials are working to clear trees from seven major roads.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. reported nearly 15,000 without service, most in Richland County.

Progress Energy reported about 1,400 customers without service from Sumter to Darlington..
