An early morning traffic crash in Aiken County has claimed the life of a Saluda County resident, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

Marcus A Gilchrist, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of a single-vehicle wreck that took place at 4:15 a.m

Gilchrist was driving a four-door 2000 Acura south on South Carolina Highway 191 near the 800 block when for unknown reasons he crossed into the northbound lane, left the road and struck a utility pole, knocking it over. The vehicle then overturned, ejecting Gilchrist through the driver's side windshield, Carlton said.

Gilchrist died from multiple body trauma. Toxicology is pending. This is the ninth fatal crash in Aiken County in 2011. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Aiken County Coroner's Office are investigating the accident.
