Coroner: Clearwater man died of head trauma

The Aiken County Coroner this afternoon released the cause of death for 72-year-old Howard Goode, who was found dead in his home Thursday.

Severe head trauma due to a beating was the ruling from autopsy results, said Coroner Tim Carlton.

The Aiken County Sheriffs Office arrested Michael Henderson, 38, 598 Kershaw Drive, North Augusta in connection with Goode's slaying.

Police said Goode's body was located by a caregiver in his Clearwater residence about 12:45 p.m.

Investigators were able to obtain evidence and conduct interviews at the scene, which identified Henderson as the person responsible for the crime. Henderson has worked for the victim in the past as a yardman.

The motive in this case is believed to be a robbery.

Authorities said Henderson, 38, of the 500 block of Kershaw Drive in North Augusta, entered the Ashley Motel at 4875 Jefferson Davis Highway around 3 a.m. Thursday, presented two guns and demanded money. During the robbery, Henderson told the clerk he had already killed one person, police said.

Officers located Henderson sitting in a chair outside the motel. During a pat down, officers discovered two guns, a bottle of gin, drug paraphernalia and a bag of marijuana, an incident report said.
Authorities later connected Henderson to Goode's murder.

Henderson has been charged with armed robbery, disorderly conduct, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, malicious injury to real property, murder, burglary and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

He is currently being held at the Aiken County Detention Center.
