WASHINGTON - Responding to critics' relentless claims, President Barack Obama today produced a detailed Hawaii birth certificate in an extraordinary attempt to bury the issue of where he was born and confirm his legitimacy to hold office. He declared, "We do not have time for this kind of silliness."

President Barack Obama pauses while speaking about his birth certificate, Wednesday, April 27, 2011, in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington

By going on national TV from the White House, Obama portrayed himself as a voice of reason amid a loud, lingering debate on his birth status. Though his personal attention to the issue elevated it as never before, Obama said to Republican detractors and the media, it is time to move on to bigger issues.

Citing huge budget decisions in Washington, Obama said, "I am confident that the American people and America's political leaders can come together in a bipartisan way and solve these problems. We always have. But we're not going to be able to do it if we are distracted."

Obama spoke shortly after the White House released a copy of the long form of his birth certificate, which contains more extensive data than a version released earlier.

The certificate says Obama was born to an American mother and Kenyan father, in Hawaii, which makes him eligible to hold the office of president. Obama released a standard short form before he was elected in 2008 but requested copies of his original birth certificate from Hawaii officials this week in hopes of quieting the controversy.

Until Wednesday, the White House had insisted that the short form certificate was the appropriate legal document confirming Obama's birth and no further proof was needed.

But so-called "birthers" opposed to Obama have kept the issue alive. Potential Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently began questioning why Obama hadn't ensured the long form was released.

From New Hampshire, Trump took credit for getting Obama to act.

"He should have done it a long time ago. I am really honored to play such a big role in hopefully, hopefully getting rid of this issue," Trump said.

Polls show large numbers of Republicans have continued to doubt Obama is a natural born citizen eligible to be president. Trump has seized on the issue as he weighs a GOP candidacy.

While Obama and White House officials avoided mentioning Trump by name, officials said they released the birth certificate partially because the issue had moved beyond fringe discussion, and Obama criticized a media culture that had not let the story go.

"This issue has been going on for two, two and a half years now. I think it started during the campaign," Obama said. "I have watched with bemusement, I've been puzzled at the degree at which this thing just kept on going."

"We're not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers," the president said.

He did not take any questions and did not say why the document had not been released earlier.

Many Republican leaders have sought to distance themselves from the "birther" theory as a discredited notion not worthy of national public debate.

In a statement after Obama spoke, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called the issue a distraction - and yet blamed Obama for playing campaign politics by addressing it.

"The president ought to spend his time getting serious about repairing our economy," Priebus said. "Unfortunately his campaign politics and talk about birth certificates is distracting him from our number one priority - our economy."

The newly released certificate is signed by the delivery doctor, Obama's mother and the local registrar. His mother, then 18, signed her name (Stanley) Ann Dunham Obama.

The form says Barack Hussein Obama II was born at 7:24 p.m. on Aug. 4, 1961, at Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital, within the city limits of Honolulu.

There's no mention of religion. It says his father, Barack Hussein Obama, age 25, was African and born in Kenya and his mother was Caucasian and born in Wichita, Kan. Obama's mother and the doctor signed the certificate on Aug. 7 and 8.

Hawaii's registrar certified the new photocopy of the document provided to the White House on April 25, 2011.

The White House also released a letter from the president on April 22 requesting two certified copies of his original certificate of live birth. Also released was a letter from Loretta Fuddy, Hawaii's director of health, approving the request.

The president's personal counsel, Judith Corley, traveled to Hawaii to pick up the documents and carried them back to Washington on a plane. The documents arrived at the White House around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

There is a HUGE difference

There is a HUGE difference between being a U.S. citizen and a NATURAL BORN U.S citizen. The Constitution requires that you are a Natural Born U.S. citizen. I don't think there was any doubt as to his citizenship (although there are questions about that floating around), but rather is he a NATURAL BORN U.S. citizen.

Is this the same document

Is this the same document that was released previouly and is NOT considered a Birth Certificate?

Anyhow, I hope the Democrats are happy and can rest easy, the Republicans didn't intend to vote for his re-election either way so naturally they don't care.

I appreciate the fact that

I appreciate the fact that Trump has the courage to bring forth questions that others haven't had the guts to ask. Hillary started it but was then scared off by the race baiters so bringing it out into the open has to be a good thing.
I don't believe that Trump has any intention of running for president but is
dealing with (and taking the heat for) O's shortcomings in what he considers the good of his country.
Trump is an American and a Capitalist with a capital C...NO...I don't think he would make a good president - but perhaps a better one.
It is another beautiful day the Lord has given us. Rejoice and be thnkful for all blessings.

The real question is how many

The real question is how many people who voted for McCain cared that he was not technically a natural born US Citizen. He was born in Panama. It was on a military base so he was give citizenship but that birth place isn't in the US.

I also want to see an investigative piece on how many representatives have questionable Birth Certificates.

And to all of you making a

And to all of you making a big deal because it says "Certificate of Live Birth"...I don't know what your birth certificate says but I was born here in Georgia and mine has "Certificate of Live Birth" as well.

The recent rants of Donald Trump, Palin and others over the politically expedient subject of Obama's birth certificate has become amusing and at the same time, ridiculous. Ask me for a long form certificate, I don't have one. I was born in Georgia in the 80's and you won't find a doctor's signature or anything like that. Want to question my citizenship? Go ahead.

The real thing behind this is you have a bunch of 50+ white folks who are in denial and shock that this is no longer a nation of WASPs. They're scared to death that in just a decade or more, white people will no longer be the majority in this country. You really don't see any black, latino or asian "birthers" now do you? It's really just white people, that's about it. They're freaked the hell out that a black liberal is now in the White House.

WASPS are aware of the fact

WASPS are aware of the fact that other nationalities could someday be the majority, but has the black community given thought to where this puts them. Other nationals has the notion that they are more intelligent than Americans, so it is not simply the WASPS that will be affected.

AND now if only the radical lefties could be stopped with their tirades about a 9-11 conspiracy....

this is nuts. the law

this is nuts. the law states you have to be born a citizen of this country and 35 years old to run for president. not to complicated and pretty simple..its the LAW. the question that should be asked is one who is sworn to upheld the constitution and the law..and refuse compliance of the simplist requirement of a law and choose to ignore til now..he is unfit to be president..if you cant trust simple comformity to simple laws how can we trust him in the back room deal making.

Certificate of live birth =

Certificate of live birth = birth certificate. Some states call the Certificate of Live Birth. It's the same thing.

Obama haters will never be happy and will make some other stuff ups. John Mccain was not even born in the US. He was born in Panama. How come no haters asked Mccain for his birth certificate?

Just hateful craps and why the Republicans and haters trying to rip our Medicare and gave them to the insurance industry? Pure radical corporate welfare!

I would think that ALL

I would think that ALL presidents would have a birth certificate on file to satisfy the requirements of office and prove their age and place of birth before they are sworn in. (BTW McCain wasn't ever sworn in, he lost the election.)

THE US has always recognized those born to Americans assigned to other countries as natural born..just the facts.

Everyone that question his

Everyone that question his citizenship at birth is remedial. His mother was an American...she was traveling abroad....that made him eligible even if he was born in Afghanistan. Republicans go hang your head and cry in time-out. Democrats, go to your room because you are grounded for two-weeks.

We have much more important

We have much more important issues:

How about gas prices. When Obama took office, gasoline was $1.83 a gallon. On Tuesday, the national average was $3.87.

Obama's politics are to blame. This could have been prevented.

QE1 & QE2 have severely weakened the US dollar. When the US dollar is weak, gas prices go up. So does food, etc. Because the fed keeps printing money, it is causing inflation. Obama is in charge & is approving all of this.

Why is there is a moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico? (for U.S. firms. Brazil has been given a permit by the community organizer)

Why were the drilling permits in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska taken away?

Why is the community organizer withholding Shell's air permits for drilling? Because of this Shell walked away from an estimated 27 billion barrels of Arctic oil. They also walked away from their $4 BILLION investment. That $4 billion will be added to the already high price of gas - that you and I have to pay for.

Why have only 1 or 2 drilling permits been approved in the United States over the last 2 years?

Yes, obama wants our energy prices to "necessarily skyrocket". So that he can "change" our behavior. To force the development of alternative energy & to make his communist pals even richer than he has already made them.

Don't worry everyone, obama has the DOJ on this high gas price issue. He is blaming the oil companies and the Mom & Pop shops selling it. I'm SURE they'll get to the bottom of it all.
