COLUMBIA -- A police officer has been shot and wounded and a suspect is dead after a traffic stop in a Columbia neighborhood.

Chief Randy Scott says the suspect was shot after he opened fire on officers just before 5 a.m.

Police spokesman Brick Lewis says the officer and his partner had stopped a sport utility vehicle and were walking toward it when someone inside fired a gun.

The SUV sped off to a home several blocks away. Lewis said officers coaxed the suspect out of the house and shot and killed him after he opened fire on them with an AK-47.

Lewis says the officer's bullet-proof vest stopped the bullet, and he is being treated at a hospital.

The names of the officer and the suspect have not been released.

I'm glad this officer is alright, but let's hope for his sake that his department does not issue take home cars. Otherwise, he will be chastized regardless of his sacrifice!

Sounds like suicide to me to

Sounds like suicide to me to come out shooting knowing the police will mow him take with bullets. It's kinda sad that people get to this point in their lives. I am glad to hear the officer is doing well.

Sorry, but I just wanted to

Sorry, but I just wanted to reiterate the sacrifices that we (the police) make in course of doing our job, and how petty it is for people to argue over whether or not we should be allowed to drive our patrol cars home.

On a side note, an AK-47 is serious firepower, and those cops are lucky to be alive. But, at least the suspect is dead!

Also, these Cops should get 2

Also, these Cops should get 2 medals:

One for handling this situation so well.

And one for killing the suspect, they just saved taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars!

OUTSTANDING job gentlemen!
