A student will receive a scholarship in honor of a Richmond County school official, the Southeastern Association of School Business Officials recently announced.

Gene Spires, the district's senior director of federal programs, budgets and grants, was selected for his leadership and contributions to the district and the Georgia Association of School Business Officials, and the service he has provided his peers and colleagues, the regional association said.

Spires is recognized as one of the top school business officials in Georgia and serves as a mentor and role model for members of the state and regional associations, the group said in a news release.

The scholarship will go to a student in Spires' honor as part of the regional association's Outstanding Business Officials award program.
