A 21-year-old South Carolina man was killed about 10 p.m. Tuesday in a vehicle accident on Rainbow Falls Road in Graniteville.

Aiken County Chief Deputy Coroner Darryl Ables identified the man as Brandon Antoine Turner. Authorities are still trying to determine where Turner lived.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that the accident happened after a car ran a South Carolina Highway Patrol checkpoint at Whaley Pond Road and Donald Pearson Drive. Troopers pursued the vehicle but it got away.

Within several minutes, however, a vehicle believed to be the one that drove away was in an accident on Rainbow Falls Road near Stephens Road, the news release said.

A witness went to the scene to help the motorist and found one person had been ejected from the vehicle and the other was fleeing on foot.

The identity of the second occupant is still under investigation, as is the cause of the accident.

The sheriff's office, North Augusta Public Safety, coroner's office and highway patrol are all involved in the investigation.
