The man arrested for fatally shooting 19-year-old Darnell Lorenzo Brown at a July 4 barbecue last year pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter Monday.

Jerome Jerrod "Dirt" Sturgis was sentenced to 18 years in prison and five years probation by Superior Court Judge Carlise Overstreet, according to court records. Sturgis was initially charged with murder but it was reduced to the voluntary manslaughter charge.

He also pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated assault, stemming from his shooting a 12- and 19-year-old at the same barbecue, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Sturgis was apprehended later that month after fleeing to Columbia.

The more media produces junk the more junk happens. Glorifying violence in the media ( documentaries, music, and news) DOES cause it to spread! I took my own by the scruff of his neck and dropped him off, I wanted him more afraid of the rod before his ignorance kicked in! ! ! Thats right I want mine totally scared of me when they are not around me, its called PARENTING....... Time out my rump......

3 people shot, 1 dead and he gets manslaughter? 18 years? He could have gotten more time if it was child porn.

Mr Folk, could you get the explanation why the charge was reduced to manslaughter from murder? Also, is the 18 yrs including time for the aggravated assault?

The sentence was probably

The sentence was probably reduced by having the defendant agree to a plea deal. DA's office puts him away for 18 years and saves the time, money and aggravation of a trial. Simple cost vs. benefit analysis.
