COLUMBIA - The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory calling for a mix of rain and snow in northern and central portions of South Carolina.
Weather service meteorologist Shawn Smith says the advisory is in effect beginning early Thursday and lasting through most of the morning.
Smith says those areas under the advisory will get up to an inch of precipitation and caution should be taken since slippery roads could result.
Smith calls the forecast a tricky one, because whether the precipitation is snow, rain or a mix depends on elevations and upper-level temperatures. He stresses the weather service has not issued a winter weather warning, which would occur if two inches of precipitation were forecast.
