Report: Sumter officer passed out before crash

COLUMBIA - South Carolina troopers say a Sumter police officer passed out behind the wheel of his cruiser right before the head-on crash that killed him, and he was not wearing his seat belt.

The Highway Patrol released findings of its accident reconstruction team Thursday.

Troopers say data from 39-year-old Cpl. Chuck Nesbitt Jr.'s cruiser shows he never hit the brakes or steered to avoid the crash that killed him on U.S. 521 on Jan. 21.

Investigators say they also found tire marks off the right side of the highway where the driver of the SUV struck by the cruiser tried to avoid the collision.

An officer in the cruiser with Nesbitt and the driver of the SUV have recovered from their injuries.

Troopers say no charges will be filed in the wreck.
