Surrey Center break-in nets empty register

  • Follow Crime & courts

A burglar broke into a Surrey Center business this morning and made off with the empty cash register, according to Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Leisey.

The bandit broke into a window at Fetch Dog Treats at 357 Highland Avenue around 3:30 a.m. and fled with the register. The store announced the burglary on Facebook this morning and said staff had already boarded up the window.

No comparison to Regency Mall and to suggest such is pure ignorance.

The problem with Surrey

The problem with Surrey Center is that it is right on the border of "the Hill" and "the ghetto". Ride through some of those side streets next to the Hill area and you will see plenty of low-income housing One wrong turn can put you in the midst of somewhere you don't want to be.

Surrey Center is about 2

Surrey Center is about 2 blocks from not so good areas. This doesn't surprise me.

This is going to get worse. The economy is dictating it. The entitlement crowd is capitalizing on it. The progressive socialists (communists) are calling for it.

Francis Piven, Van Jones, & pals are outright calling for civil unrest (all obama friends, advisors & folks he's studied & admires). Top down, bottom up revolution. It's already happening in Europe. It's starting small here and it will rise to a larger scale soon.

Austin.... Floridasun was

Austin.... Floridasun was only being sarcastic lol... He/She is copying some of the comments made on another article... Everybody knows the Surrey Center draws the upper middle class, rich, and wealthy crowd.

Dixieman... If the wifesaver were actually located in the Surrey Center instead sitting next to nothing way across the street by itself.. The restaurant would still be open today.. The Surrey Center is always crowded and has plenty of private security...

The areas,Sand Hills, etc

The areas,Sand Hills, etc near Surrey Center are making an effort to clean up their neighborhoods. Let;s hope they have success. There are proud homeowners living in the midst of the low-life.

I hope it works, Dani, but

I hope it works, Dani, but somehow, with the direction that Richmond County has been going in, even that area, it doesn't seem very likely it will happen. I think it will get a lot worse before it gets any better.

Which direction has Richmond

Which direction has Richmond County been going? Just because the chronicle and other media outlets tend to focus mainly on Richmond County when it comes to crime reports.. It still doesn't mean that armed robberies didn't decrease 10%, rapes 4%, and several other crimes decreased in 2010...

The chronicle could have printed a hundred articles on armed robberies last year... In still wouldn't take away from the FACT that armed robberies dropped 10% in 2010...

I mentioned this before...ads

I mentioned this before...ads promote Surrey Center's long history of beign an outstanding shopping center, but the reality is that it only caters to that Augusta population known for a certain level of affluence and appearance...with that said, no business at any level should be burglarized. Meanwhile, I applaud the recent writer to the AC who is from the Sand Hills area and who wonders why there is no support to boost his area...surely it's not because it is not affluent enough?

My wife and I own Fetch Dog

My wife and I own Fetch Dog Treats. We have been in business since July 2002. We love being at Surrey Center and we are very fond of our landlords. They have been nothing but kind and generous to us. We also love the other shop owners, who have become like family to us.

We have amazing customers and are very thankful for having them in our lives. Surrey Center is a special place that provides a safe and family friendly atmosphere to shop, dine, stroll, etc.

We do not, however, like crooks and people who break into businesses or houses at 3:30 am. (or anytime for that matter). It could have happened anywhere and to anyone, unfortunatly they decided to break into our little shop. We posted on our business page on Facebook in order to let our customers know that while the door is boarded up (it is fixed now) we will be open for business. We really didn't think it was worth a mention in the Augusta Chronicle...but thanks!

And thanks to those of you who shop at and support small/local business like ours. Kevin Scheyer

I said armed robberies

I said armed robberies decreased in Richmond County by 10% and not 10 last year.. As of November 2010(Jan-Nov)there were already 53 less armed robberies in 2010 compared to 2009(Jan-Nov).

I have never read the rants

I have never read the rants of so many whiners in my entire life. It's horrible what happened to the owners of the store, but to pronounce this is as the demise of Surrey Center is beyond absurd. These things happen. The nice shopping center I lived next door to in suburban Charleston was burglarized at 3:00 a.m. in the morning under circumstances identical to the above. It's funny how no one there complained that it was somehow the end of the neighborhood.

Countyman, rapes, armed

Countyman, rapes, armed robberies and murders are face to face confrontations. It takes a "little" criminal to commit a burglary. He does not want to be seen or known. Armed robbery and burglary are not even close to being the same. Where are your burglary figures? Bet they didn't go down! If they did I will stand corrected.

Why is it that every time

Why is it that every time there's a break in or robbery in Surrey Center, it's assumed that it was accomplished by someone from the Sand Hills neighborhood? These crimes are happening in communities all over Augusta and the criminals can be from anywhere. There are many good Augusta citizens that live in Sand Hills and they are working very hard to protect the community.

The reference to Sand Hills

The reference to Sand Hills was not to cast aspersions but to note that they are making an attempt to get rid of some of the less desirable.
It was meant as a compliment.

sandhillbilly, I think it's

sandhillbilly, I think it's assumed that the robbery was done by someone who lives in the area because that person would have a very short distance to run and hide, rather than get in their car and drive off a good distance, which would be easier for someone to spot and identify. But you're correct in your other comments.

This isn't the first robbery

This isn't the first robbery and/or break in at Surrey Center. There have been several but they are not mentioned in the Chronicle. Surrey does need to beef up their security at night, there isn't enough. Some places have been broken into or vandalized more than once in the past year. It's a result of the economy and bad people, not necessarily in THAT neighborhood. Crooks know there isn't security there, which is why they go there.

As a former business

As a former business owner...if your cash register is visible from outside...leaving it open after hours will let thugs know it is empty......sometimes........ (some thugs are too dumb to understand that)

dog53...yes, we use ADT

dog53...yes, we use ADT Security and like them very much. They called us at home and the police. That is how I knew of the break in at 3:30 am.

However, security systems don't stop burglars, they just let you know that you just got robbed. :) I do know that it scared them off and kept them from breaking into any other shop, for that I am thankful!

And I have to say that the two officers that arrived were a great help and very professional. They even waited at the shop while I went home to get wood to put over the door.

"Francis Piven, Van Jones, &

"Francis Piven, Van Jones, & pals are outright calling for civil unrest (all obama friends, advisors & folks he's studied & admires). "

Really, Chillen? A 77 year old wheelchair bound woman (Frances Piven) who is an advocate for the poor and voting rights, is asking the nation to rise to arms so they can get "welfare checks" from you? And Van Jones, who spoke in October, about bring the nation together to solve its problems instead of "hateful rhetoric" (like yours), is trying to divide us?
James O'Keefe and Glenn Beck have you totally under their control!
