Found in Jacuzzi, dead man may be Athens bandit

ATHENS, Ga. -- A man found unresponsive in a hotel jacuzzi Monday night and pronounced dead a short time later may be a suspect in an armed robbery that occurred earlier Monday, Athens-Clarke police said.

Doyle Thomas Brittain, 41, of Moose Club Drive, was found face down in a jacuzzi at the Comfort Inn and Suites on Old Epps Bridge Road around 6:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead soon after at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Police say evidence at the scene points to Brittain as the suspect in an armed robbery that occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Monday at Walgreen's Pharmacy, 110 Hawthorme Ave., during which  a quantity of oxycodone was stolen.

Some of the stolen medication was found at the scene, police said, and Brittain was identified as the suspect after police reviewed surveillance video.

There was no evidence of foul play, police said, but an autopsy is scheduled to determine an exact cause of death.
