Both Columbia and Richmond county public schools will begin class at least two hours later Monday morning, officials announced.
Aiken County schools will be closed.
With the threat of sleet and snow looming, Columbia County schools Superintendent Charles Nagle said this afternoon that schools will open two hours later than normal on Monday. Richmond County also announced a similar two-hour delay.
Nagle said the threat of severe weather for early Monday morning prompted his decision to initiate a late start.
If conditions are as bad as predicted, Nagle said he likely will close schools for the entire day.
Buses and/or the opening of the schools will be two hours later than the normal start time, he said.
Richmond school officials said they will also review conditions in the morning and hope to announce by 7 a.m. if schools will close the entire day.
With a threat of ice, schools should be closed. No lives are worth opening schools.
Nice to see that someone can show some leadership and make a decision.
I wonder what on earth is RC superintendnet doing that he cant make an announcement? Its a 100% chance of some sort of snow storm and RC hasnt made an announcement yet? I hate when people sit on their butts and wait till the last minute to make a move!!!Parents do have children they have to plan for incase they have no school....
Just cancel the entire day! Chances are the roads won't be any better by 10:00. They'll probably be worse with the snow turning to ice in the morning.
As of now, Reba, Columbia County is delayed, not closed.
I choose to keep my children at home. I do NOT have to wait for an anouncement from a government agency to determine what is best for my children. I am responsible for their safety.
I'm impressed...maybe everyone does this, but I received a voice mail from Evans High's principal sharing this announcement. It was appreciated. On another note, people want you to close the schools without actual precipitation then complain when the kids aren't in school enough..
Nagle's a joke. He's gonna make everyone jump through hoops to get their kid to school by 10, only to release everyone by 1PM when the sleet starts to fall and stick. Just call it a day already.
It's only gonna get worse as the day goes on, not better. Are they stupid???
punkin, looks like they deleted one of yours and one of mine. I got an email saying I had insulted you. I beg your forgiveness. Thought control is alive and well at the AC.
What will probably happen -- is there will be no snow or sleet in the early morning. Columbia and Richmond Co. schools will go in late. Then around noon (or later) freezing rain will descend on the Augusta area. Then the BOE’s will decide to close the schools. Buses will be slipping and sliding trying to get the children home as well as the parents that are trying to get to school to get their children. A few weeks ago -- back before Christmas a winter storm descended on Atlanta, GA during the rush hour. I was listening to 750 WSB on the internet – the Atlanta area had over 1000’s wrecks in a 3 hour period. People just left their cars on the interstates and got home the best way they could. At 11:00 PM one of the wrecker drives decided it was unsafe for him to be working and he just started giving people rides home. The Nation Weather Service says this is going to be bad – they could be wrong, but I think it is better to be safe than sorry.
I like the guy who wrote "I am responsible for my children's safety." I am glad that somebody out there thinks that way. Who remembers when Charlie made that premature decision to cancel school and the entire snow system scooted off to the northwest and missed us entirely. Everybody second guessed him. So, he learned not to jump on the bandwagon too quickly. He is an honest leader. I am glad we have him running things. He is never dishonest. He will keep the best interest of the school children in mind no doubt.
Do you realize northern cities have snow removal budgets in the millions of dollars for plows, salt & labor? Who is going to pay for all the removal here and how is it going to be removed? If you wait 1 day it will mostly be gone from the streets. Having grown up in a northern city I have no problem driving in these conditions, I just don't want to be out among all the idiots who don't know how to drive in these conditions.
