Accidental gunshot kills SC hunter

COLUMBIA — Authorities say a South Carolina man has died from what appears to be an accidental gunshot wound while hunting.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said 75-year-old Charles Lindsey Brakefield of Hopkins died Sunday evening while hunting near his home just south of Columbia.

State Natural Resources Department spokesman Brett Witt says Brakefield apparently was putting his rifle into his vehicle when it went off, shooting him in the chest.

Witt says a relative discovered Brakefield's body after family members went looking for him when he did not return home.

Watts says Brakefield's death is still under investigation but likely will be ruled accidental.
