One-hundred seventy-two DVD players destined to be children's gifts were stolen from a tractor-trailer parked at Pilot Truck Stop, 2975 Gun Club Road, sometime between Friday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Someone broke into the trailer and took the Coby DVD players, the property of Toys R Us and valued at $56,244, according to a Richmond County Sheriff's Office incident report.

Kinda misleading saying they

Kinda misleading saying they were "meant to be childrens gifts" when in all honesty, they were merchandise.

Someone left a trailer there,

Someone left a trailer there, unattended? This sounds awful fishy! BTW, if they broke a seal on the trailer it's a Federal offense.

Not necessarily Taylor. It

Not necessarily Taylor.
It says the dvd's were property of Toys R Us, that doesn't mean the store didn't mark those to be delivered to a children's charity, etc. Article kinda vague there.
I agree, it's sad that this happened at all!
Abby, I presume driver was staying elsewhere for the weekend maybe? I dunno..

Unpublished

172 dvd players is NOT a truckload. After looking at the Toys-R-Us website- the most expensive Coby DVD player is a personal dvd player for $149. 172 of them would be $25,628- not $56,244. The Coby brand is an off brand and not of high quality. Something doesn't sound right!

"Destined to be children's

"Destined to be children's gifts"? Makes it sound like they were Toys-for-Tots donations. They were merchandise. It's not like there is going to be a shortage of DVD players and the kids are going to go DVD playerless this year. Big deal.

Hopefully the cargo was

Hopefully the cargo was insured and the children's gifts will be replaced.
However I am wondering this, if the kids don't have a DVD player then they probably don't have any DVD's to play on them. What good is that? Its a nice gift but pretty much useless except to trade in for cash at a pawn shop.....

How do you steal 172 dvd players? Looks like you'd need a pretty big vehicle to do that with.

172 DVD players *is* a

172 DVD players *is* a truckload...a pickup truck. "Truckload" doesn't necessarily have to be referencing the semi, though it is implied. It would be stealing a truckload, though. At the alleged $327 a pop (do the math), I think someone has sorely inflated their figures. Maybe the whole truck's load of DVD players was $56K, but I doubt the 172 were valued at that. Toys R Us will have a Coby portable player for $50 on Black Friday, and given the timing of this shipment, I'd imagine these were for that sale. It normally sells for $99, and probably actually costs them $60 or so, if even that. Maybe the overinflated numbers were for the insurance claim? ha

How do you go into a truck

Nobody could unload that much merchandise that fast, corgi, at least not by hand. Some people are in the habit of dropping their trailer to bobtail home. It's a common practice and in Augusta, a pretty dangerous one. If this load was SO valuable, they would've had some sort of lock on it... and no lock was referred to. Someone unloaded all these dvd players and NOBODY noticed? I find that a bitter pill to swallow. Also, because I've dealt with the trucking industry for many years it makes me wonder if someone wasn't royally ticked with their travel agent and pulled up with a "DVD players for sale" announcement. The article is too vague to know any of this. I was playing devils advocate. It DOES sound fishy, though.

Corgi, read the article

Corgi, read the article again. The units were taken between Friday and 12:30 PM Sunday.

That's a lot of time for anyone to steal them. A one-armed man in a wheelchair could snatch up 172 DVD players in that window of opportunity.
