2 charged after cop car theft

Authorities have charged two people with an early-morning burglary that later result in the theft of a patrol car, according to Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Tony Walden.

Officers were called to the 2100 block of Moncrieff Street at 2:16 a.m. in reference to the two subjects removing property from the residence.

During the investigation, one of the subjects entered the unattended, unsecured patrol car and took off, according to Investigator Aaron Hannsz. The car was recovered with moderate damage about one mile away on the 3600 block of Peach Orchard Road.

Hannsz said he is unsure how long the vehicle had been missing before it was recovered.

Kenyatta Sturgis, 25, and Jasper Newton, 31, have been charged with the burglary of the residence.

No one has been charged with the taking of the patrol car, but, Walden said, Newton is the primary suspect.
