'Hard hand' used in man's arrest

A Hephzibah man was charged with felony obstruction Sunday morning after officers said they had to use a "hard hand technique" to subdue and handcuff him.

Responding to a 3:45 a.m. call that John Bowman III, 31, had punched a woman at 2543 Spirit Creek Road, deputies encountered resistance from Bowman, who refused to get out of his car and shouted obscenities at them, according to an incident report.

When Bowman resisted being handcuffed, swung his arms and tried to elbow a deputy, they wrestled him to the ground and struck him to gain control, the report said.
