Furlough closes Richmond County schools today

All Richmond County public school students get a day off today. So do teachers, support staff and administrators.

Today is a furlough day, giving district employees a three-day weekend, though that means they also are docked a day's wages for the extra time off.

This is the first of five furlough days, a cost-saving measure the school district adopted in these tough financial times. The other furloughs are scheduled for: Nov. 22 and 23 (which gives students and district employees the entire week of Thanksgiving off), Feb. 22 (making the President's Day weekend four days), and March 18.

The district was able to shave about $5 million off its operating expenses for fiscal 2010-11 with the five furlough days.
