An Augusta man remains in jail, charged with attempting to pay off a state drivers license test examiner to allow him to pass.

Parmanand Sookraj, 57, of Willowood Road, was charged with bribing a government official.

Sookraj was taking the road test portion of his driving test at the Evans office of the state Department of Driver Services Tuesday when he repeatedly offered the examiner money to pass him, said Susan Sports, a DDS spokeswoman.

“It was enough times that the examiner took him seriously,” Sports said. “People joke around and that’s all well and good. But the examiner understood that it was a serious offer.”

After the road test, the examiner contacted a DDS investigator, who came to the office and witnessed Sookraj attempt to bride the examiner again.

“The gentleman was not passing the road test,” Sports said. “After the road test, pass or fail, the examiner will ... just go over the test with them basically. The individual had offered money (again in the office) to successfully pass.”

The investigator witnessed the attempted bribe in the office and arrested Sookraj. He is being held in the Columbia County Detention Center on a $5,100 bond, according to jail records.

Sports said she didn’t know if it was Sookraj’s first attempt at the test or his immigration status other than to say he wouldn’t have been allowed to take the test without first proving that he was a legal alien or citizen.

Attempting bribes are not uncommon, but usually involve paperwork more than actual vehicle operation.

“I hear about it from time to time,” Sports said. “Usually, the bribe and fraud are people not having the appropriate documentation and trying to get the examiners to look the other way and coming in with bogus documents and trying to pass them off and asking the examiners to push them on through.”

An examiner accepting a bribe and passing someone who didn’t earn it could have serious consequences for the driver and the examiner, who could be terminated.

“It could have lead to a really serious situation,” Sports said.

With the poor driving skills

With the poor driving skills that many people have these days, how bad was this guy that he couldn't even pass the test? Just glad he's not on the road!

Whomever this examiner is, YOU NEED MORE LIKE HIM/HER. Way to go, KUDOS for doing the right thing. It so refreshing to hear there are a few reputable people still left here on earth!

"An examiner accepting a bribe and passing someone who didn’t earn it could have serious consequences for the driver and the examiner, who could be terminated." If the driver can go to jail, so should an official that accepts the bribe.

Agreed on the Kudos to the examiner that did the right thing. Thanks for keeping this guy off the road if he can't even negotiate cones.

He did it because in his

He did it because in his country, that's what you do. All officials need to be paid for anything to get done.

Try doing business in other countries without bribery. See how far you get.

Like Mexico, for instance. Or any other Third World country.
