Wagener man pleads guilty to murder

A Wagener man was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to murdering his neighbor and setting fire to the neighbor's home last March.

On March 13, Dashawn Sanders, 31, of Sharon Road, got into a fight with George Griffin, 57, while drinking at Griffin's home on Buckboard Road. When the fight turned physical, Sanders hit Griffin on the head, killing Griffin by blunt force trauma, according to his autopsy.

Griffin's blood alcohol content was .219 when he died, according to investigators.

Sanders doused Griffin's body and mobile home with lighter fluid and waited until the fire was fully involved before going to a neighbor's house and calling for help, according to Aiken County Solicitor Strom Thurmond, Jr.

Sanders was charged with murder after investigators determined Griffin died prior to the fire. Sanders waived an Aiken County venue and jurisdiction to appear before Second Judicial Circuit Judge Jack Early in Barnwell County, according to the Aiken County Solicitor's Office.
