A headlock, pepper spray and a metal baton were needed to stop a man who reportedly attacked a deputy Tuesday night outside a downtown night club.
The deputy went to Sector 7G on the 600 block of Ellis Street around 9:30 p.m. to investigate complaints about a patron, Logan Riddle. When the deputy told him to leave the property, Riddle reportedly threatened the deputy with a fist, so the deputy tried to arrest him, a report said.
Riddle then attacked the deputy, who twice used pepper spray to try to slow down his attacker. The deputy then hit Riddle with his baton multiple times. It took two witnesses and the deputy to bring Riddle under control, according to a report.
Riddle, 23, of the 400 block of South Old Belair Road, was charged with obstruction, disorderly conduct and attempting to remove an officer's weapon.
Probably not the first time he has assaulted a police officer. After he sleeps it off, I hope he gets the book thrown at him.
the fact is, in the morning this idiot will be bragging about how it took 20 cops to put him down...such an unfair advantage for a true hero of the downtrodden.
GGpap
Some how I doubt this is how it went down. This is probably not the first time the cop has put himself in a position where he gets to use excessive force. I've read too many accounts and seen too many videos (like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihY829CCOX4)
to just take the cops word for what happened. Besides, RCPD has a reputation of abusing their power. Once they can show the public they're above reproach, I'll take their side first over a drunken idiot.
Looks like his face is red from the pepper spray http://appweb2.augustaga.gov/InmateInquiry/Disclaimer.aspx

Yeah, OMallen, I like how you assume. Ever tried to talk to a drunk? Ever tried to reason with a drunk? Ever been challenged by a drunk? I'm betting not. I'm betting you've never had to be in a position to defend yourself without balancing the violation of the rights of an other. I'll go a step further...some mutant citizens in this area have a reputation of resisting authority.
Obviously this man can't handle drinking alcohol. His sentence should reflect this problem.
The officer seems to have handled the situation properly.
This is right behind my old place. There is always lots of rowdy punk-rock folks hanging around that club, but we never really had many problems except graffitti. The club owners are very active and police themselves very well, plus the folks are gone pretty early usually (this is a all ages club I think) so this sounds like a fluke where someone was drunk and they needed help. That is waht the cops are for.
Sounds like Riddle wanted to show how tough he was and got a good opportunity to do just that.
Good luck getting off easy with violent actions towards an officer,
Brad
Sounds like the perp was wired prior to encountering the deputy. Probably more than alcohol was involved. Glad to hear no one was seriously hurt. If people would have better respect for authority there would be far less problems.
There were no alcohol or drugs involved. Force....was. Putting a fist up does not warrant the beating, I have seen the bruises. He held off the baton...never taking a gun,as the reference to the weapon might assume. There is so much more to this situation, and yes, he should have left when asked to.
It is good that bystanders saw the need to assist the deputy in restraining and bringing this drunk under control. They probably saved someone from getting shot.
stormy58,
How do you know that there was no alcohol or drugs "involved?"
Were you with Mr. Riddle the entire night, even before he went downtown? Were you with him the entire time he was there? If not, you cannot say that there was no booze and/or dope "involved."
If you were with him all day and night, please explain his violent behavior and refusal to obey the officer that caused the "Force" to be used.
Explain your definitive statements please.
Sounds like the officer did the right things to me and that your buddy got off pretty light with a butt whupping and booking.
Cheers,
Brad
OMALLEN, instead of "reading and critiquing" why don't you go and ride with the RCSO or any department. 99.9% of officers are not ever "looking for trouble", especially in the uniform patrol division. This deputy was "called to the scene", you really don't think he would prefer to be doing something else? The establishment called them because he would not heed their orders to leave so he was a trouble maker prior to the deputies arrival. It not only took the deputy but two by-standers to help him arrest this individual. Upon arrival (with witnesses) the deputy just wanted him to leave but he chose to not listen to the owners, managers, deputy, etc. and he chose to resist arrest and fight, not the deputy. He was probably drunk but alcohol does not excuse his behavior. If we as a country don't start really supporting our officers there will be less and less going into this already thankless job for little pay to save the butts of those who wish to hide behind computers and bash them on a daily basis for simply doing their jobs.
Well stormy, he was obviously doing something if the cops were called on him. Waving a fist was asking for trouble, if he'd cooperated and gone home none of this would have happened. He's at fault and hopefully will learn something from this.
Understanding that the officer gave the suspect a direct order to leave the premises and he refused to leave that should have been a clear sign that the suspect, might have been under the influence of some "substance". What I'm more concerned about is the actions of the officers after non-compliance. Just because the suspect is not responding to verbal commands does not give the officer the right to use un-neccessary force as the officer sees fit. I would hope that there is a third or netural party to keep record of "said" events.
What happened to "Obey the cops" The article PLAINLY states that Riddle ATTACKED the deputy. What the hell is the cop supposed to do at that point??? Should the cop have used a tazer? No 'cause then the bleeding hearts would say that was excessive force. Use his pistol? See answer to previous question. So Omally, what is the cop supposed to do, say pretty please don't attack me?!?!?!?!?! People please, WAKE UP.
I was not there and did not witness what happened. I can only assume that the facts presented are accurate. As for the comment that the deputy used excessive force, again, I was not there, but can only assume the deputy maybe should have possibly only struck the subject only once with the metal baton. Only the force necessary to bring the situation under control. In my opinion, the deputy acted correctly accordingly to his/her training.
Officer: Leave the premises
Riddle: no, Ill beat you up
Officer: turn around and put your hands on the wall
Riddle: no, Ill beat you up
Officer: this is your last warning
Riddle: no, Ill beat you up
Officer: pSSSSSSSSSSS (deploy the spray)
Riddle: Imma beat you up!!
Officer: thump, thump, thump (swinging the club)
Riddle: you beat me up!!!
Next thing we will see is his family on the evening news crying about their boy with a bruise. Two things catch my attention. First: there were patrons helping the officer so this guy was (without a doubt) acting stupid. Second: This Officer would not have used unnecessary force with that many witnesses without cause. There may be more to the story but this kid got what he deserved.
Cops are TRAINED to hit the person 4 times, each elbow and each knee, The purpose is to inflict as much PAIN on the four major joints of the body to incapacitate for a short amount of time. An improperly used baton will result in broken bones. I don't see any mention of injuries. Good job officer.
Geez, give this man a break, don't you know he was well brought up and is a God Fearing man......................
Here's the sad part for all of you. He was raised by good parents and was a good kid. He has now been arrested three times in the last month. He is walking a very dangerous path and if drugs are not involved, then he has just lost all of his common sense and deserves what he gets when he stands up to an officer like a bully.
Good Lord!! Was this guy 6 ft tall and all muscle?? That much force AND extra help to restrain him? Wow..
If he was acting out and it did take that much to control him, then this isn't a case of cop brutality. Yes, there have been cases like that, however it does not make every single one like that! Figured there would be some screaming excessive force, abuse of power..
It seems that a lot of you have very little understanding of what it takes to spend 12 hours going from call to call not knowing when someone will try to hurt or kill you.
You say this deputy used excessive force because he ended a fight that the other guy started.
If someone drew their fist back as if they were going to hit you, you would hit them first but you expect this deputy to act differently. Be for real!
How many of you have ever thanked an Officer of the Law for their service? Almost daily, I have someone approach me to thank me for my military service but I get the feeling that no one ever gives my brothers in blue the recognition they deserve. That was the one thing I respected about NY. They treat their Officers and Firemen with the upmost respect. All of us have sworn to protect the citizens of this nation and it’s sad that people despise Law enforcement officers.
If the kid has been arrested 3 times in a month it looks to me like he's nothing but a trouble maker and deserved to be handled as he was. He's on a collision path with jail.
Strike one for the good guys
sad for the parents, perhaps they need to put him under a tighter rein though.
There is a certain mentality that will jump at the chance to call Police Officers bullies.....these are the same people who get mad when they get tickets for speeding........if you are a law abiding citizen you have no need to hate or fear the Police...if you are a loudmouthed drunk...a leadfooted driver....or a criminal then yes by all means ..be afraid. Good Job Officers!
I did not say the officer was a bully, i said the young man stood up and acted like a bully
