Ga. roadcheck blitz yields 135 citations in 2 hours

DUBLIN, Ga. - Police say a blitz targeting drunken drivers in Dublin and surrounding Laurens County resulted in dozens of traffic tickets, but few citations for DUI.

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety and Dublin police said Thursday that a net of sobriety checkpoints in the middle Georgia county resulted in police writing 139 traffic citations in just two hours.

Officials said only two of those citations were for driving under the influence.

Traffic tickets written during the Wednesday night checkpoint blitz, called Operation Rolling Thunder, included 36 seatbelt violations and 49 child safety seat citations.

WTG !!! People, buckle your

WTG !!! People, buckle your kids properly. If you do not know how to properly use a child safety seat then call and see where you can learn. Most law enforcement agencies and EMS services provide free inspections to help with properly using child safety seats. I was one of 8 trained in inspecting child safety seats when I worked EMS and 75% of seats I inspected simply were not being used peoperly. An improperly used child safety seat can cause serious injury in an accident. Please seek help if you are not sure if you are safely using a child safety seat before you get in an accident.

Right you are!! If you aren't sure how to secure your child, seek help.
You can stop at any fire station, and I'm sure they will show you the proper way to use your child safety seat.

You can't see that is how

You can't see that is how these cash strapped counties are closing their budget gaps? Expect more of the same.

Sounds like a county

Sounds like a county fundraising effort. Purging evil and inadvertently filling the county's wallet.

If this is the way they have

If this is the way they have to make up the deficit then I'm ok with that. If you are wearing your seat belt, and your children are properly secured, then you have no worries. They need to do this more everywhere.

It's an invasion of our privacy to have checkpoints like this all over. It's like a third world country where the Federales check your papers every few miles. It clearly doesn't work to apprehend DUI suspects from the article.

The other offenses are

The other offenses are probably out of date insurance cards, not having your license on you, etc.etc. nit picky legalities to siphon money from ordinarily law abiding motorists. I didnt read that warnings were issued just BS to enrich the gestapo and the insurance companies. We have the same here in Anderson SC. If your not a local its $300 or so but if you are a city resident its called a "manner of driving" citation and $125

I think ishefa &

I think ishefa & gaspringwater hit it on the head too..... EXPECT MORE! I do my driving by the book simply b/c I don't want to give Uncle Sam or any of his little minions (state/county/city) more money than they already get from me (income/property/mobile home/sales taxes). What I read from this article is that "they" are using our money to get MORE money from "us". My drummer's wife & child were on their way back from a middle school football game & had to go through one of these Dublin roadblocks. Louisville is quite a drive from Dublin sooo.... WHY can't WE charge THEM money for our time & issue them citations for harassment???

A seat belt never stopped an

A seat belt never stopped an accident, although a seatbelt keeps you in the car in case of an accident. So why are Ga police calling it a sorbriety checks. Since Ga. changed the seatbelt law they can make money off of seat belt tickets. So multiply 36 tickets times $25.00 = 900.00 in 2hours and that is just in Dublin.

I think it's great! And I

I think it's great! And I love all the whiners that think they are above the law. Sell your car and ride a bike or walk if you don't feel like you can buckle up yourself and your little ones, buy insurance, drive the speed limit, quit tailgating, stay out of the left lane, and you probably could have some cheese with that Whine? When will it start here?

The point is these people who

The point is these people who were stopped at this checkpoint were not drinking, speeding, tailgaiting or whatever. They were driving lawfully, yet had to stop and produce their license and registration and be scrutinized for drinking. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled you can't stop traffic for more than a very few minutes with these checks.

For them to have written that many tickets for seatbelt violations in a two hour period in Dublin is astounding. There is either something wrong with the seatbelt law or the police, there, don't know what the law is. Afterall, not too many years ago, it was not even a law that you had to wear a seatbelt.

The last two accidents I went

The last two accidents I went to before leaving the fire department involved head on wrecks and both drivers were wearing seat belts and their air bags deployed and both were buried. Air bags and seat belts do not always work but I still wear mine. At least, I do not have to worry about an air bag in my 1997 truck smashing my glasses into my face. It does not have one, just a lap and shoulder belt.
