Ex-DMV worker in SC charged with taking $300,000

COLUMBIA — A former employee at the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles has been charged with taking more than $300,000 from the agency.

Multiple media outlets reported 39-year-old Wendy Gaskins of West Columbia was charged Tuesday with embezzlement of public funds.

The State Law Enforcement Division says Gaskins was a facilities manager with the DMV and is accused of taking the money for personal use.

SLED says Gaskins set up a fake company known as "J. Creech Construction" and deposited the stolen funds in a checking account for the company.

It was unclear if Gaskins had an attorney.

We are seeing more and more

We are seeing more and more of this. The small businesses need to be more aware of whats going on in their businesses. We really should not trust anyone with every aspect of our business.

Cops were on to her pretty quick. Seems she had been reported to them for being friendly to customers and smiling. They knew something was up.

Seems they have the same problem with government employees as Richmond County. Probably thinks she was underpaid and over worked. {:)

Can't stand a thief, and its

Can't stand a thief, and its not like she did it out of desperation, another article said she remodeled and added on to her home with it and bought a travel trailer, just splurging. She needs to be punished good so she will really regret it, but some bleeding heart will give her a slap on the wrist.

There's a picture of her on

There's a picture of her on the Net. White, 30ish.

"Gaskins' husband works for the State Transport Police, but he is not being investigated. Investigators say he had no knowledge of the alleged crime."

This is the part that I don't believe.

If all of a sudden my spouse was flush with money- especially $300,000 worth in 18 months- I would know.

How did she explain away her W-2 when they filed taxes?

Sloppy control of government

Sloppy control of government office - one of them - $300,000 in 18 months? Her W-2 would not show her "extra income". Unbelievable!

I think corgi meant, the W-2

I think corgi meant, the W-2 as in the husband didn't notice the discrepancy in the w-2 and money spent when they filed their taxes together. He obviously lives in the house and seen the work being done, the little DMV W-2 wouldnt have covered all that, neither would his pay, unless they have a lucrative side business other than thieving. Either he is just as guilty, playing dumb, or she does all of the finances and is a good liar as well as a thief and hes just one of those husbands who has no clue to what the finances are and don't really care..... kind of like mine!! lol But really, you can only be so naive, I mean come on!! And working for the SCSTP, you would think a little common sense and logical deduction would be required. lol
