A Statesboro man will be the subject of a new episode of The Discovery Channel's Mystery Diagnosis.
The episode is scheduled to air at 10 p.m. and midnight today, 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sept. 13 on the Discovery Health channel.
Former marathon runner Greg Sapp was diagnosed at age 34 with a rare neurological disease called transverse myelitis.
The symptoms started in February 2008 with unexplained migraines. A few days later, Sapp awoke one morning to a strange tingling in his toes.
Over the next few days, the painful sensation spread through his feet, up his legs and to his waist.
"I basically lost feeling in my legs," Sapp told the Savannah Morning News in January. "The only thing I felt were my nerves. It felt like my legs were on fire."
Sapp's family brought him to St. Joseph's/Candler Health System, where neurologist Dr. Julia Mikell recognized his symptoms as a typical presentation of transverse myelitis.
Mikell said she sees about one case a year of the rare neurological disorder.
Sapp spent two weeks in the hospital and the next three-and-a-half months using a wheelchair. After physical therapy, Sapp continues to use a cane or a wheelchair.
Shouldn't there have been a "spoiler alert" on this story?
