ATLANTA - Five men have been charged with stealing the identities of homeless and jailed people to collect $1.6 million in phony tax refunds.
Federal authorities say Peter Williams, Kelcey Pierre Miller, Rahman Hill, Jabbar Ivan Pender and Keith Lamone Richard were part of the plot to use the identities of people in homeless shelters and jails.
They say the men filed income tax returns with inflated claims for refunds between December 2005 and March 2007.
The men are charged with conspiring to file false claims for payment, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years and a fine of $250,000. Miller is also charged with 11 counts of wire fraud.
Section 8 fraud one day and tax return fraud the next the government has come to collect. No just election time.
