ATLANTA — Officials at Zoo Atlanta say a female tiger rattlesnake discovered missing from its cage last week has been found dead.

Zoo officials had been looking for the snake since it disappeared on Friday. They say they received a call today from someone who reported seeing the snake.

It's unclear how the venomous snake got loose. Zoo officials has said they thought the snake was still in the building where it was housed.

The snake was found after a citizen called and told them it was killed on her porch across the street from the zoo. Officals thought it was contained within the zoo, but it had gotten into a nearby neighborhood. The gentleman that clubbed it to death did not know it was an escapee from the zoo. They zoo had not given a lot of public notice about the escape because the zoo keepers did not realize the snake had left the property. The entire was a chain of human error, causing the snake to be destroyed. The homeowner is not responsible for any criminal charges nor civil damages for their actions. The zoo keeper that failed to secure the cage will be disciplined.
