If you're going to Savannah today, stay cool. A heat advisory is in effect and heat index values could reach 118 degrees.
High temperatures in the lower to mid 90s combined with increased humidity and the sea breeze produce dangerous heat index values as high as 114 to 118 degrees this afternoon.
A heat advisory means that a period of extreme temperatures can be expected. The combination of heat and moisture will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. People are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sunshine, check on the elderly and stay in an air conditioned location as much as possible.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Augusta.
The high for today is expected to be 101, but with the heat index, the high will soar between 105 and 109, according to Bruce Cherry, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
There’s also a 40 percent chance of more afternoon and evening thunderstorms. A chance for rain is expected to continue every day throughout the weekend.
If it gets anything like it did in Hilton Head last week, no one will be able to stay outside.
I've never understood people who claim that the coast is somehow less hot than Augusta or Columbia. The humidity in Savannah and Charleston is unbelievable.
Because they think the *sea breeze* keeps temps cooled down. HAHA.. I lived in Charleston for 2 1/2 years, it was wayy more humid and miserable there than here.
