ATLANTA - Federal tax officials are giving a temporary reprieve to more than 8,000 charities and nonprofits across Georgia that have failed to file tax returns.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Internal Revenue Service is giving small nonprofits in the state until Oct. 15 to file returns for 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Tax-exempt organizations have to file annual returns even if they don't owe the government money. Religious groups are generally exempt from the requirement.
Charities and nonprofits that do not file can lose their tax-exempt status. IRS spokesman Mark Green says getting that tax-exempt status back after it is revoked can be a time-consuming process.
"Religious groups are generally exempt from the requirement." - and the hypocritical beat goes on.
