An Evans woman has claimed the top prize in one of the Georgia Lottery’s scratch-off ticket games: $400,000.
Michelle Tanner, of Evans, purchased the $5 “$400,000 Fast Play” ticket at Allen’s Country Store, 4277 Washington Road, Evans, Sunday afternoon, said store owner Paul Dhillon.
A regular customer, Tanner approached Dhillon after scratching off the ticket to show it to him. “Am I looking right?” he said she asked. “Is it $400, or $400,000?”
“It’s $400,000,” Dhillon said he told her.
Tanner claimed her winnings Monday at the Georgia Lottery office in Augusta, receiving an after-tax check for $276,000.
Tanner is the third of six possible winners in the game to claim a prize, said Georgia Lottery spokesperson Kimberly Starks. That means three of the top-prize tickets have yet to be claimed or purchased, she said.
Though Allen’s Country Store doesn’t get a bonus for the sale, the site gains status among players as word of the prize gets out, Starks said.
“They’ll be considered a lucky store,” she said, adding that a customer of Allen’s also won $50,000 in “Fantasy 5” in June. “This is a second big win for his store,” Starks said.
Tanner declined to have a photo taken when she picked up her winning check. Telephone calls to her residence went unanswered.
Why announce the winner's name? Foolish - if you want my opinion.
Why isn't the name of the owner of "Allen's Country Store" Allen?
I was just discussing that the other day. No way if I won a large sum of cash, would I want my info posted for all to see! Gee, can we say bring on the robbers, the *don't I know you's*, and the less desirables around.
Congrats to Ms. Tanner on her win:)
I wonder why the store doesn't get anything? I thought they recieved some sort of financial incentive???? Anyway, that's awesome for Ms. Tanner:) Good news today:)
It's a good thing she won the money in 2010 instead of 2011. With the Obama tax increases coming that saved her about $20,000.
Chillen, you are so right because thief Obama will take most of our money next year.
Congrats to the winner, thumbs down for giving your name though. To Chillen and Marie21. This country is going to hell in a hand basket. Is all I am saying
Lucky lady and if she is smart lady she will do smart things with the money and not just throw it away like so many other winners do..........
What a blessing...Ms. Tanner... don't forget about me, I'm your cousin... Lol... Just joking... Congrats...
The name Allen's Country Store comes from the Allen family who sold it to Mr. Dhillon. He simply kept the established name.
Boy, JMO, that's really sad if what you are saying is accurate.
Well, I guess my post was a little too personal. Didn't mean to disparage her character or life history. Let's just leave it that I'm quite sure she can use the money. We all could. $276,000 is nothing to sneeze at!
Barry, thanks for posting that information about the store's name. I was thinking that Mr. Dhillon probably bought the store from the Allen family, but that would make too much sense. Obviously it was too hard for some people to piece together.
