WAYCROSS, Ga. -- A Ware County man remains jailed on vehicular homicide, drunk driving and other charges stemming from the death of his 3-year-old grandson.

The child, William Landon Xzavier Teegardin Vickers, died when he was ejected from a Chevrolet Blazer being driven by his grandfather, William David Vickers Jr., 43, on Saturday, Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal said.

The grandfather was treated for minor injuries and then was arrested on charges of homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, child safety restraint violation, endangering a child under age 14, reckless driving and failure to maintain his lane, Royal said.

Vickers remains in custody at the Ware County Jail.

The ongoing investigation by sheriff's deputies and state troopers indicated Vickers apparently was intoxicated while driving with his grandson north on Jamestown Road near the Sandy Bottom area of Ware County, Royal said.

This one incident makes the papers because of the death of the child, but how many times a day does a parent or grandparent risk the lives of family and friends and everyone on the road when they drive after self medication, alcohol, or drug abuse?
Are we lucky there aren't more deaths? Is only the most blatant offender noticeable or newsworthy?
I don't know what to do about this situation, but in a country where personal responsibility is shunned by our government promotions and our schools, I'm surprised there aren't many more deaths of innocent children...children that are being shown that this is acceptable behavior.

No one deserves that Jessica. But am sorry for the loss.
Johnston, if the paper included every dui death, there would be either no room for anything else, or the paper would be like reading a novel.
It occured in Ga, it involved the tragic death and neglect of a small child, of course it will be in the paper. Get over it!

It won't do any good but I have to say it one more time, don't drink and drive.
