Athens man dies in motorcycle wreck

ATHENS, Ga. -- A 46-year-old Athens man was killed Saturday afternoon when he lost control of his motorcycle on Boley Drive, Athens-Clarke police said.

The rider, unidentified pending notification of his family, was driving east along Boley Drive off Commerce Road when he lost control of the bike and struck a utility pole, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 5 p.m., Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said.

It is the fourth fatal wreck this month involving a motorcycle. Two riders were killed earlier this month in separate crashes on Hull Road, and an 18-year-old was killed July 4 when he wrecked his motorcycle in Oglethorpe County.

Police suspect speed was a factor in the latest crash, though investigators won't know for sure until they finish reconstructing the accident.
