8-month probe led to SC trooper's drug arrest

CONWAY, S.C. — Authorities say a South Carolina Highway Patrol officer arrested last week is accused of buying cocaine.

Horry County police on Monday released more details about the arrest of 42-year-old Lance Cpl. Bobby Lee Spurgeon.

Spurgeon was arrested Friday and charged with drug possession after police say he bought more than three grams of a white powder that tested positive for cocaine.

Horry County police say they started investigating Spurgeon in December and put him under surveillance.

Spurgeon was off-duty when he was arrested. He was released from jail Saturday, and it was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Spurgeon has been fired from the Highway Patrol.
