Aiken man dies in motorcycle crash

A 43-year-old Aiken man died Saturday in a motorcycle crash, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Eugene Weeks was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on South Carolina Highway 19 north, near South Carolina Highway 191.

Weeks was traveling north on a 1996 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he left the road, lost control of the motorcycle and slid more than 200 feet. His body came to rest in the northbound lane, where he was struck later by a white Monte Carlo driven by Keivea Moore of Edgefield, S.C. Moore said she did not see the body lying in the road.

It appeared that Weeks died of injuries suffered in the original crash, Carlton said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Newberry, S.C. Toxicology is pending. The crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner's Office.

The fatality is the 16th in Aiken County this year, Carlton said.

A body can be easily missed

A body can be easily missed depending on where it was lying and the nature of the road (curve, hillcrest, etc)...

Since the victim was already dead, the driver of the car is not subjected to charges. It is an unfortunate accident--condolences to the family.

Being familiar with that area

Being familiar with that area it would be difficult for somebody to see something in the road there if it was night. The story does not state what time the accident happened. That area does have a long curve to it and I have worked several accidents at Hwy 19 and 191 due to visibility factors when I worked EMS including 2 fatal wrecks. If the accident happened on the Eureka side of the intersection I could see someone hitting someone in the road at night due to the curve and slight grade combined. Either way my condolences to all involved here.

The Aiken Standard reports

The Aiken Standard reports this accident happened just before midnight. Given the location and time I could see someone hitting something in the road at this hour going north due to the curve and slight grade.
