A 23-year-old man drowned at a pond in the Canoochee area of Emanuel County early Wednesday afternoon.

Kelvin Lashoun Brown, 23, was swimming across a local farm pond with two of his friends when he grew fatigued and unable to stay afloat, according to a news release from the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office. Brown’s two friends tried unsuccessfully to rescue him. Brown’s body was later recovered from the pond with help from the Burke County EMA Dive Team and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Brown’s body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab for an autopsy. The incident remains under investigation by the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office, but there was no indication of any foul play, the release states.
